Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that leads to elevated blood glucose levels. Glucose is your body’s primary source of fuel and comes from the food you eat. Insulin is a hormone synthesized in your pancreas that helps carry the glucose from your blood into your cells.

If you have diabetes, this process isn’t working properly, causing sugar to accumulate in your bloodstream. Over time, untreated high blood sugar levels can lead to other health conditions, such as kidney or heart disease.

There is no cure for diabetes, but the team at BioLounge can help you manage the disease to keep your blood sugar levels in check and reduce your risk of complications.

What are the types of diabetes?

Diabetes is categorized into types based on how your insulin is affected. The functional medicine providers at BioLounge manage all types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

Previously referred to as juvenile diabetes, Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed when your pancreas no longer produces insulin. This type of diabetes usually develops during childhood or adolescence and is considered an autoimmune disorder.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and most often develops in adults.  If you have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, either your pancreas isn’t producing enough insulin or the insulin isn’t functioning as it should to remove the glucose from your bloodstream. Carrying excess body weight can increase your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. However, there are also thought to be genetic components of the disease.

Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops in pregnant women. You may be more at risk of developing gestational diabetes if you gain too much weight during your pregnancy.

How is diabetes managed?

Management of diabetes depends on the type of diabetes you have. Your BioLounge provider individualizes care based on your diabetes type, overall health, and lifestyle. The goal at BioLounge is to find the root cause of your chronic condition, not simply manage your symptoms.

Treatment for diabetes may include:

  • Medication: insulin or oral hypoglycemics
  • Healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Stress management

The team at BioLounge also teaches you how to monitor your blood sugar so you can see how food and activity affect your blood sugar levels.
